What is masterbatch?

Masterbatch is an additive that is used in various industries for coloring and adding special properties and characteristics to base materials and polymer compounds. This material is prepared as a uniform mixture of dyes, pigments and other additives in a specific ratio. Masterbatch is solid and usually comes in polymer or resin form. Masterbatch is prepared as a plastic colorant and can be added to various plastic materials if needed. By adding masterbatch to basic materials such as plastic, rubber or industrial films, you can give them a desired color and add the desired characteristics to them.

Masterbatch components

Masterbatches consist of three main components: base polymer, additive, and compatibilizing agent. The base polymer, which usually includes polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and other polymers, is used to form the polymer matrix. Additives include chemicals added to the masterbatch to improve the properties of the polymer, such as property-improving additives, pigments, and fillers. A compatibilizing agent is also a method that adapts additives or dyes to the molten polymer to form the final consumer material. To improve the chemical compatibility between the additives and the base plastic, grafted polymers with maleic anhydride are commonly used.

Masterbatch production process

The use of appropriate equipment is also necessary for masterbatch production, the masterbatch production machine includes the steps of feeding, mixer, injection of masterbatch into molds, cooling and cooling, output of masterbatch and packaging. These processes may vary according to the type of masterbatch and the devices used.

Feeding: At first, raw materials including base materials (such as plastic resin) and colors are orally injected into the device. These materials reach the injection device through the feeding system and edible packaging.

Mixer: In this step, the base materials and colors are combined in a machine called a mixer or extruder. The mixer provides the final masterbatch by combining and preparing the ingredients. This step includes applying pressure and heat to the mixture of materials and injecting them into the masterbatch injection machine.

Masterbatch injection: In this step, the masterbatch prepared by the injection machine is injected into suitable molds. Molds can be sheet molds or two-piece molds that fill the molds using plastic injection machines.

Cooling and cooling: After the masterbatch is injected into the molds, the molds are transferred to the cooler. At this stage, the masterbatch is cooled and turns from a liquid state to a solid state. This process allows the masterbatch to form inside its mold and gain the necessary strength.

Masterbatch output: After cooling and transferring from the mold, the masterbatch parts, which include the base material masterbatch with different colors, are removed. Masterbachi parts can be tested and inspected at this stage to ensure the quality and specifications according to the required standards.

Packaging and storage: Finally, masterbachi parts are packed and transported to the market for storage and transportation. Masterbatch packaging is usually done in plastic bags, cartons or other packaging.

Types of masterbatch

Masterbatches are divided into different types based on the type of plastic resin and dyes used. Some types of masterbatches are:

Colored masterbatches: These types of masterbatches are used for coloring plastic materials. They consist of plastic resin and various dyes that, with the correct combination, create the desired color in plastic materials.

Black Masterbatch: It is a polymer material that consists of a combination of carbon black and polymer resins and is used as a petroleum product in plastic and polymer industries. This material is used to polish and strengthen plastic and polymer surfaces.

Anti-UV masterbatches: These types of masterbatches are used to protect plastic materials from harmful UV radiation. They contain plastic resin and anti-UV additives that give the plastic material resistance to rust and discoloration when exposed to sunlight.

Waterproof masterbatch: These types of masterbatch are used to increase the waterproof properties of plastic materials. They contain plastic resin and water-repellent additives that give the plastic material resistance to water and moisture penetration.

Anti-heat masterbatches: These types of masterbatches are used to increase the thermal resistance of masterbatches for plastic materials. They contain plastic resin and heat-resistant additives that protect plastic materials from high temperatures and heats in the production and use processes.

Anti-static masterbatches: These types of masterbatches are used to control static electricity on the surface of plastic materials. They contain plastic resin and anti-static additives that give the plastic material resistance to static electricity.

Also, masterbatches can be classified based on the type of plastic resin, such as masterbatches of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyester (PET), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and etc. Each of these plastic resins and masterbatches related to them have special characteristics that are used in different industries based on different needs.

Masterbatch applications

By using masterbatch, the desired color is added to the plastic and plastic materials can be produced in a wide range of different colors and appearances. In addition to coloring, masterbatch can also be used to improve the physical properties of plastic materials. Some masterbatches can add properties such as heat resistance, mechanical resistance, increased transparency or anti-impact to plastic materials.

The use of masterbatch in the production of plastic materials can reduce costs. Instead of using separate plastic colors for each plastic material, it is possible to use an integrated masterbatch, which can reduce the costs of preparing and applying the color.

Also, masterbatch can be used as a filling agent, anti-corrosion, anti-sag, anti-water and anti-static. This material is used in various industries, including the automotive industry, packaging, sanitary ware, and electronic industries, due to its ease of use, cost reduction, and increased efficiency in production.

Advantages of using masterbatch

Using the masterbatch, precise amounts of additives can be easily and accurately added to the plastic. This reduces measurement errors and increases accuracy in setting plastic properties.

By cleaning and uniformly distributing the additives in the masterbatch, it is possible to avoid the changes or inhomogeneities caused by the additives in the plastic structure. This improves the quality of mechanical and appearance characteristics of plastic. By using masterbatch, the consumption of additives in the production process is reduced and hence the cost of production is reduced. Also, the time required to add additives to the plastic is also improved.

Using color masterbatches allows manufacturers to quickly change the color of the plastic or improve other properties such as transparency, light transmission, and mechanical properties. By using masterbatches, the quality and uniformity of additive and plastic production is improved. This reduces fluctuations and changes in the mechanical and appearance characteristics of plastic and helps maintain quality standards.

Also, the use of masterbatches allows manufacturers to use additives in a more precise and controlled manner. This issue leads to the reduction of waste and pollution in the production process and helps the environment.

By using masterbatches and adjusting plastic properties, the useful life of plastic products increases. For example, the use of UV protective masterbatches can protect the plastic from degradation and deterioration from sunlight. Using masterbatches, it is possible to change the characteristics of plastic based on the specific needs of customers and the market. This allows designers and manufacturers to offer products with diverse and special features.

In general, the use of masterbatches brings a significant improvement in the quality and characteristics of plastic and allows manufacturers to have high efficiency in the plastic industry. By using masterbatches, production costs can be reduced, production time can be shortened and efficiency can be increased. Also, the possibility of rapid changes in color and plastic properties is improved, which increases the marketability of products.

Conclusion

In this article, we talked about masterbatch production and its uses and benefits. Masterbatches are plastic materials containing plastic resin and various additives that are used to add special properties to the plastic material. Masterbatches can be used in various industries such as automotive, electronics, packaging and construction. By using different types of masterbatches, the properties and characteristics required for plastic materials can be adjusted, such as coloring, heat resistance, Anti-blue, anti-explosion, etc. Choosing the right type of masterbatch depends on the type of plastic material and its applications.
